Wilderness Institute, College of Forestry and Conservation, University of Montana National Wilderness Preservation System (shapefile) vector digital data http://www.wilderness.net/GIS/Wilderness_Areas.zip 2010 wilderness_areas Missoula, MT University of Montana, College of Forestry and Conservation, Wilderness Institute This data layer consists of National Wilderness Preservation System areas in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The map layer was created by combining the best available data from the federal agency responsible for administration of a given wilderness area. Where larger scale data could not be obtained the National Atlas layer "National Wilderness Preservation System" was used as the data source. In its present form source data varies from a scale of 1:10000 to 1:2,000,000 (see lineage for details on source scale). In its present state these data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. This is a work in progress and dates on individual records represent the last known update date (see accompanying spreadsheet at http://www.wilderness.net/GIS/WildernessUpdates.xls and cross reference using WID for contact/source information where available). The intent is to replace smaller scale data with larger scale data as it becomes available. It is hoped that the end result will be a dataset at or near national map accuracy standards for 1:24000 (1:36000 for Alaska) scale data. In its present form source data varies from a scale of 1:10000 to 1:2,000,000 (see lineage for details on source scale). Missoula MT 59812 USA This dataset was compiled by Lisa Eidson, Webmaster for Wilderness.net at the University of Montana's Wilderness Institute, to form individual wilderness boundaries obtained from the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), and the Forest Service (USFS). FS data has been obtained from the Automated Lands Project, or from regional or national forest GIS staff. BLM data is from a national dataset from field inventories. FWS and NPS data have been obtained from National Park or Refuge offices. For a history of updates, contacts from whom the data were obtained can be cross-referenced using the WID in the spreadsheet at http://www.wilderness.net/GIS/WildernessUpdates.xls. Unclassified ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.3000 File Geodatabase Feature Class Topology established using ArcGIS 9.0. Checked for overlaps and gaps between polygons. This map layer includes National Wilderness Preservation System areas for all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
